where we describe the book "Getting a Feel for Lunar Craters". It
features tactile diagrams of the lunar surface designed to educate the blind
and visually impaired about the wonders of Earth’s moon. H8T Correspondent
Shawn Klein touches and describes the graphics as the book’s author Professor
David Hurd and Host Dave Uhlman talk about the
science of the moon. In this episode we describe the side of the moon we can’t
see.Š We also talk about a crater which is
about ¼ the size of the moon that was only recently discovered.Š People refer to the “Dark Side” but we
explain why that is not true.Š More accurately
it is the far side.Š The moon is stuck in
an orbit with the same side always facing earth.Š People had never seen it until we launched
space probes to look at the back side.Š We
reveal it all in this episode and tell you how you can feel the “Dark Side” for
yourself.

Since first opening in 1977, the Pawnee Earth Lodge has been one of the most popular attractions at The Field Museum. This full-scale reconstruction of a traditional Pawnee lodge, true to the originals in form, appearance, and construction, is a fully furnished Native American dwelling that brings to life the traditional ways of this Great Plains tribe. The Pawnee Earth Lodge was recently renovated and relocated within the Native American exhibition halls. The new Lodge stands in a setting that evokes the world of the Great Plains, where the Pawnee historically built these structures. Visitors inside the Lodge will gaze up through the open smoke hole in the roof to see a rendering of stars in the night sky just as the Pawnee star-gazers did as they pursued their spiritual beliefs.
